CHICAGO

Visiting Nolan on his new assignment, and Carol's family in Chicago.

The marker on the map shows where Nolan is living while in Chicago. Our boat tour started just west of him and went out to the lake just below the Navy Pier, which extends into the lake east of his residence. The boat took us a short distance to the north, then to the south to see the city skyline, then back into the river and down the south fork.

Night Landing

Arriving and seeing the lake shore. Our first pictures are from the Cohen residence on Lakeshore Drive at Belmont. After that, we visited Nolan at his new digs on the banks of the Chicago River near downtown Chicago.

Henry Cohen is Carol's father's first cousin.

At the entrance to Nolan's residence.

Nolan is on the north bank of the Chicago River.

The river is nicely landscaped along most banks and is a great urban amenity.

This fountain is almost on Nolan's doorstep.

Every hour during the summer, this water jet commemorates the reversal of the Chicago River at the beginning of the 20th Century.

With the sun in the west, the spray makes a great rainbow.

The city decided to reverse the flow of the river to prevent city sewage from flowing into the lake and polluting its water source.

The reversal now sends the drainage south toward the Mississippi, where it is carried on ultimately to the Gulf of Mexico.

(The flow is filtered and processed before being sent southward!)

Looking out Nolan's window, we were looking at the lake just north of the Navy Pier. The fireworks are a regular event at the pier during the summer, each Wednesday and Saturday evening. Paul Ansell drove us up to Skokie to visit his mother, Jeanette.

Jeanette is Henry Cohen's sister.

After a quick breakfast near Millennium Park, a boat tour of the Chicago River was very interesting.

A nice little breakfast spot on the sidewalk across Michigan Avenue from Millennium Park.

Access ti the lake from the river requires passing through a lock that raises the water level about 1.5 feet.

This is a view of the Navy Pier as we passed it on the way out into the lake.

The black building with the spire on top at the left of the photo is the Sears Tower, tallest building in Chicago.

Nolan's building is the scond one to the right of the black building near the center of the photo.

Chicago has 52 drawbridges within its downtown and the tower houses are distinct on each.

This open draw bridge is over the north fork of the river as we passed it on our return to the dock.

After the boat tour, we went back for a walk through the park.

This striking ampitheater structure in Milennium Park was designed by Frank Gehry.

This fascinating structure in the Park is known as "the bean". It is polished to a mirror finish on all exterior surfaces.

Note the distortion in the reflection of the passers-by.

Indside the bean looking up is a disorienting experience.

This is the "straight-up" view from inside the bean.

Everyone you see here is a reflected image!

Leaving the Cohen residence on Monday, we had a visit with Diti and Ashley Gordon close to DePaul University before Diti dropped us at the airport for the trip home.

Diti Gordon, an old friend of Carol's, with her daughter, Ashley, picked us up for a visit on Monday before returning us to the airport for our flight

Ashley is currently at DePaul University in Chicago and we strolled around that area briefly.

The "parting shot" at the airport, ending a great visit in Chicago!
