Visiting South Africa and Botswana in June & July, 2006.

The map shows the approximate location of the ranch, and the lighter area on the map outlines the drive up to Pont Drift, where we crossed the border into Botswana on the way to Mashatu, the game preserve.

Our first stop was in Paris.

After a flight of 9-10 hours, we were in Johannesburg.

On Wednesday, we moved out to the Seringa ranch.

After a few days at the Ranch, we went to the game preserve, Mashatu, in Botswana.

I have grouped some "people" shots of our trip here to make them easy for family & friends to review.

Jim, driving us in from the airport.

In the wine cellar at the African restaurant in Mandela Square.

Carol gets a traditional face painting.

Winnie Bunyenyezi gets her face painted, too.

We discovered at dinner that Winnie was from Rwanda, where David & Oona are going for August.

We had live music while we ate.

At lunch the next day, the painting was still there!

At the Capitol building in Pretoria.

We meet Palinka & JC at Seringa.

Preparing for our first "Sundowner" at Seringa.

After the Sundowner, we go inside for dinner.

Our next Sundowner was out overlooking the river.

These boys at the station seemed to enjoy seeing their photos on the camera monitor.

Me with the gas station attendants on the way to Mashatu.

Our first stop in Botswana was for some refreshment just after being picked up at the border.

Moving into the tent at the tent camp in Mashatu.

A little "social" time before going on our first game drive.

Mounting up for the game drive.

Note the weapon in the guide's hand. He was never without this.

Even on the game drive, we had the traditional Sundowner.

Dinner in the outdoor "Boma".

This was an enclosed area with a fire pit for warmth, overlooking a water hole where we could see hyenas while we ate.

Morning rides were really cold (low 40's?)

That is cold in an open jeep.

Our driver was Richard, on the left, and the spotter was his nephew, Solly.

Our game group, less Jim, doing the photography.

The maids at Seringa took good care of us on our visit.

These were their new uniforms that they had selected themselves. L-R, M'Po, Maria & Lizzie, the cook.

In the hills overlooking McGregor.

Zina Miller with Carol at Quay 4 on the Wharf in Cape Town.

Part of our trip was spent in Paris.
